Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano condemned the incident and said he hoped the man would be caught and punished.

“I consider it very serious, undignified and a sign of great incivility that a tourist would deface one of the most famous places in the world, a heritage of history such as the Colosseum, to carve the name of his girlfriend,” he said.

“I hope that whoever carried out this act at the Flavian Amphitheatre will be identified and punished according to our laws.”
