The 55-year-old Ecuadorian was cited for damaging a historical building after being spotted carving “Rachid 2017” and “Diana” into a pillar using a euro coin.
It was the latest in a string of such incidents which have caused controversy in the Italian capital, including two seperate incidents involving a French woman and two Brazilian tourists earlier this year.
The vandalism of historic structures has been an ongoing issue in Rome and, in 2015, a 40-year-old Austrian tourist carved two letters into the Colosseum with a Swiss army knife.
Other iconic Italian monuments have also been tainted by tourists’ names.
