The meeting is set to take place at Apostolic Palace at 8:30 am, before the Pope holds his weekly general audience.

It’s uncertain how the meeting will unfold, given that Trump and the Pope have expressed outright opposing views on numerous issues, including climate change and the treatment of migrants and refugees.

Perhaps their most controversial clash to date was over immigration, which saw the Pope criticise Trump’s position as “not Christian”. Trump didn’t hesitate to hit back at the Pope, labelling his comments as “disgraceful”.

Trump is also scheduled to meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella while in Rome to discuss "multilateral cooperation and bilateral relations between the United States and Italy".

The US President’s stint in Rome will be followed by a trip to Brussels for a NATO summit, and then to Sicily for the G7 summit.
