Held since 2002, the prestigious awards were announced in a ceremony on Tuesday at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.
The list was compiled based on the judgement of more than 1000 culinary experts.
Mirazur in France was crowned the world’s best restaurant.
Run by Argentinian-Italian chef Mauro Colagreco, Mirazur is located in Menton, France, close to the Italian border.
The victory adds to a remarkable year that began with Mirazur being awarded its third Michelin star.
Colagreco and his team took to the stage at the awards ceremony with a banner stitched from the flags of the nations that have shaped them: France, Argentina, Italy and Brazil.
“It’s incredible, I don’t have words to explain,” Colagreco said after the ceremony.
“It’s something so special, all the work, all the love of my team to achieve this award is something so special for us for me and [wife] Julia.”
A new rule introduced this year meant that previous winners of the top award from weren’t eligible for the list, so the one guarantee of the evening was that a new star would be crowned.
The fundamental change excluded last year’s winner, Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana from the Italian city of Modena.
Osteria Francescana also took out the title in 2016, and came in second place in 2017.
The two Italian restaurants to make the 2019 list were Piazza Duomo, in Alba, coming in 29th place, and Le Calandre, in Ruban, coming in 31st place.
