The woman, identified by local media as Halina, gave birth to her son in a hospital in the Tuscan city of Pescia on Friday.

Both mother and baby, who has been named Denis, are in good health and have since been discharged from the hospital.

They are currently staying at the home of a Ukrainian family member, who lives in the nearby town of Lamporecchio.

Halina had travelled for five days with her husband, their four-year-old son and her in-laws to reach Italy from the western-Ukrainian city of Ternopil.

She went into labour the evening the family arrived in Tuscany and was rushed to hospital where midwives tended to her.

Upon being discharged, Halina gifted sweets to the hospital staff to thank them for their hospitality and assistance.

The arrival of little Denis is a shimmer of hope during a dark time for Ukraine, Europe and the world at large.

President of Tuscany, Eugenio Giani, took to social media to celebrate the news.

“Welcome Denis! A little boy born in Pescia’s hospital to a mother who had fled the war in Ukraine! Thanks to our health and hospitality workers, Tuscany has a big heart,” he wrote.
