On December 7 every year, the town marks the festive season by illuminating its magical Christmas tree with more than 700 lights.

The annual lighting ceremony dates back to 1981.

This year, the event was livestreamed via the Albero di Natale più Grande del Mondo Facebook page at 6:30 pm.

Topped with a giant star, the tree is 750 metres tall and entered the Guinness Book of Records in 1991.

The installation is powered by a PV system which stores a year’s worth of energy in the lead up to Christmas.

The tree is outlined with 300 green lights while the interior is lit up with 400 multicoloured lights.

It takes 2100 hours to erect the installation, which can be seen from up to 50 kilometres away.

Each of the tree’s lights has been “adopted” by locals, who dedicate a light to their loved ones, with messages ranging from welcoming new-born babies to saluting dearly-missed grandparents looking down from heaven.

The proceeds of the adoptions go to charity.

The Christmas tree will remain lit from dusk to late at night, until Epiphany on January 6, 2021.
