Things did not go to plan for the home side as Palermo took the lead inside five minutes.
Matteo Brunori got on the end of a defence-splitting through ball by Valerio Verre before slotting it through the keeper’s legs from the resulting one-on-one.
Minutes later, Palermo were one-on-one with the keeper again, this time Joronen making the save against Edoardo Soleri.
Venezia were gifted a way back into the game as Pigliacelli scuffed a clearance and hit his own defender in the back.
The rebound fell to Dennis Johnsen who chipped the keeper from outside the box to make it 1-1.
Johnsen would have had a first-half brace if it weren’t for VAR catching the offside, cancelling out his goal.
Venezia would need to wait until the 61st minute to get their lead thanks to a penalty resulting from a Nedelcearu elbow to the head of Pohjanpalo.
The latter made no mistake from the spot, sending the keeper the wrong way.
Just two minutes later Venezia had breathing room as Francesco Zampano’s low cross was neatly finished by Tanner Tessmann from close-range.
Venezia scored a fourth, but VAR intervened yet again for offside.
Palermo were awarder their own penalty late on when Marco Sala was brought down in the box.
Tutino went straight down the middle to make it 3-2.
Palermo are now three points outside the promotion playoff zone.
