Venice’s mayor and police chief have promised action after four Japanese tourists were slapped with a €1143 ($1758) bill for a meal in Venice.
The group ordered four steaks, grilled fish and mineral water in an osteria near St Mark’s Square.
The four diners, who were studying at university in Bologna, filed a complaint with police on Monday.
Venice police have opened an investigation following a complaint from the residents’ organisation Gruppo 25 Aprile, which broke the story.
“We defend local residents, and whoever puts the good name of Venice at risk harms all Venetians,” Gruppo 25 Aprile said in a tweet.
