The storms will start in the country’s north-western regions on Friday, then spread to the rest of the north and Tuscany on Sunday, before moving into central and southern areas on Monday.
Temperatures will drop an average of 10°C, forecasters said.
The change will bring an end to a sticky and intense August.
Temperatures in most southern and central parts of Italy are set to reach the mid-30s by Saturday and Sunday, before dropping to the high 20s by Tuesday.
Forecasters also warned that high winds across many coastal areas are possible early next week.
It comes after Italy’s northern Veneto region experienced torrential rain and hail followed by a tornado that swept across several provinces and cities on Sunday, causing extensive damage to harvests and properties.
