The Viva Leichhardt committee decided to cancel its Christmas event in light of the tragic events that took place at Bondi Beach.

It was a decision made quickly and with a strong sense of responsibility, as a mark of respect in the face of an act of violence that has deeply affected the wider community.

In a message sent to members and attendees, the management team expressed its condolences to the victims and their families, and reaffirmed its solidarity with the Bondi community and Sydney’s Jewish community.

“There is no place for antisemitism or hatred in our country,” the statement read, calling on people to pause, reflect and stand alongside those who are suffering.

President Ilario Ventolini explained that, given what had occurred, the committee did not feel it was appropriate to proceed with a celebration.

“In the face of an act of violence of this magnitude,” he said, “celebrating would not have been appropriate.

“We therefore decided to postpone the event until January, with the new date to be communicated shortly.”
