“Volunteering is one of the most precious resources of a society,” said Mattarella at the official inauguration of the northern city of Trento as the European and Italian Volunteer Capital 2024.
“Fortunately for us, Italy has a wealth of volunteers and associations that gather and organise this civil energy.
“Volunteers who bring relief to hospitals; who strengthen civil protection; who take care of environmental safety; who preserve and enhance the cultural heritage,” he continued.
“Solidarity is an impulse that starts from the conscience” and “is, moreover, a cornerstone” of our systems, said Mattarella.
“Volunteerism is itself generative of a thought, an expression of a choice.
“A choice in favour of human beings, of every human being.
“This is why volunteers can be called ‘champions of humanity,” he concluded.
