Tajani’s comments came as he was speaking to State broadcaster RAI radio on the sidelines of the cultural ‘Mediterranean’ event in Sabaudia near Rome.

“There is the commitment of the G7 and many countries, including Arab ones, with whom we share a political vision for stability in the Middle East,” said Tajani.

Italy hopes “that as soon as possible a ceasefire can be reached in the Gaza Strip, that is the key element for a de-escalation, and we will see what Iran’s reaction will be after the attacks that led to the death of the leader of Hamas,” he continued.

“I think a reaction will be unavoidable,” the minister went on to say, expressing the hope there will be “no victims and that this phase will then end”.

“The whole Arab world - Qatar, Egypt, Jordan ... can be an interlocutor of both sides and also of Iran to try to reach a positive solution,” stressed Tajani.

“The objective, which is of two States for two peoples, is not easy but we must … commit to reach the optimal result,” he concluded.

Meanwhile on Thursday, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held phone talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to a note issued by the PM’s office.

Meloni stressed the need to avert an extension of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, also with reference to Lebanon, urging the president to avoid a further escalation and to reopen dialogue.

According to the note, the prime minister reiterated Italy’s constant commitment to promote peace and stability in the region.

Meloni voiced her support for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of hostages and the strengthening of humanitarian aid for the civilian population.
