The visitors managed only one shot on target for the entire match, that being their goal in the 2nd minute.
Tommasso D’Orazio headed in Christian D’Urso’s corner and chose not to celebrate against his former club.
It was practically all Ascoli from then on, with the home side creating 17 chances on goal.
In the 36th minute, Marcel Buchel equalised for Ascoli in spectacular fashion.
Ascoli’s corner was headed clear, but straight to the Austrian midfielder who struck it first time on the volley from 25 yards out to beat a diving Micai.
The home side had a number of good opportunities in the second half but were unable to finish thanks to a combination of good goalkeeping and being unlucky with the woodwork.
Cosenza’s Sauli Vaisanen was shown a second yellow in the 94th minute for his last-man challenge on Cedric Gondo who was otherwise through on goal.
Ascoli are one point outside the playoff zone and will need to win while hoping other results go their way.
Cosenza are in the relegation playoff zone but can get out with a win on matchday 38 provided that Cittadella lose.
