Elisabeth Lardschneider, 20, reportedly fell 150 metres to her death while climbing a rockface in the Zanskar Valley, in the Ladakh region of northern India.
She had been in the area with other climbers for several weeks climbing and looking to open new routes.
Lardschneider had previously been in the national youth climbing team, was very active in the South Tyrolean alpine club Alpenverein, and aspired to be a professional mountain guide.
According to L’UnioneSarda.it, she was also an aspiring member of the legendary Catores, a highly regarded special unit of mountaineers and rescuers in the Dolomites.
“There is great dismay in the village,” Ortisei Mayor Tobia Moroder said.
