Zuppi is the head of the Italian Bishops Conference and recently spoke at the opening ceremony of the Social Week of Italian Catholics, in Trieste.

“The too many deaths warn us not to accept the old and new seeds of hatred and prejudice,” he said.

“We do not want borders to be walls or, worse, trenches, but [instead] hinges and bridges!” said the archbishop of Bologna and Ukraine peace envoy.

“We want this because this is the testament of those who have lost their lives on the borders.

“We also want it for those who, at the price of terrible suffering, have become migrants and ask to be considered what they are: people!

“The Gospel helps us to understand that we are made for each other, therefore with each other.

“Our common home requires a human and spiritually universal heart.”
