The battle was between Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo.

In 2009, spectators nervously watched on as Yamaha teammates Rossi and Lorenzo skimmed past one another in pursuit of first place.

Even in Spain, Rossi held a backing of almost half the crowd rooting for his win.

It had been two years since Rossi was victorious on this track.

The year prior, he lost to another Spaniard, Dani Pedrosa.

Rossi dominated the final laps of the 2009 race.

He held Lorenzo off for almost the entirety of the second last lap, and despite the pressure things were looking favourable for the Italian.

As the pair entered the straight for the final showdown, Lorenzo zipped past to lead into the first corner.

The Italian attacked and nabbed first place but Lorenzo charged back instantly.

A game of tug of war took place that was looking less and less in Rossi’s favour.

There were only three feasible turns until race-end which would allow Rossi to make an attack.

Rossi fans watched on in fear as he chased Lorenzo but was unable to launch an attack.

It looked like Lorenzo had done it, as he bulleted into the final turn.

Then, just seconds away from the finish line, Rossi charged up on the inside of Lorenzo in a spectacular and defying move, to finish in first place by 0.095 seconds.

The 2009 Catalunya GP remains as one of the most breathtaking endings to a MotoGP race.
