Genovese’s film was released to critical acclaim in 2016, and went on to win Best Film and Best Screenplay at the 2016 Italian Academy Awards and Best Screenplay at 2016 Tribeca Film Festival.
The film is set during a dinner party, when seven friends decide to play a dangerous game.
The attendees place their cell phones on the table and agree to make all texts and calls public in an attempt to prove that they have nothing to hide.
Letting the caller know that they’re on speaker is considered cheating.
What at first seems to be an innocent and playful distraction quickly turns into something more as the messages reveal some eye-opening secrets and how little they might know about one another.
This film is naughty, funny and surprising and the Newcastle Italian Film Festival has promised that prior to the screening “a barbershop quartet will be a little extra bang for your buck just before the film”.
The film has inspired a number of international adaptations, include in Spain (as Perfectos desconocidos), Mexico, South Korea (as Intimate Strangers), France, Hungary, Greece, China, and Russia.
On July 15, 2019, it was included in the Guinness World Records as it became the most remade film in cinema history, with a total of 18 versions of the film.
All proceeds from the screening will be donated to the Motor Neurone Disease Association NSW.
