“Day after day, we are witnessing statements and climate policies that are in open contrast to the warnings issued by the scientific community, despite the fact that the effects of this crisis are now before our eyes,” said the activists.
“Almost a year has passed since the floods that hit Emilia Romagna, causing several deaths and the displacement of thousands of people, with estimated damage of around nine billion euros.
“In the meantime, land consumption has continued to increase relentlessly, and the Italian government has announced that it wants to turn Italy into a hub for gas, a fossil fuel that contributes significantly to global warming,” they added.
Activists protesting under various groups have for months been staging headline-grabbing acts of civil disobedience across the country to draw attention to the climate crisis and call for urgent action.
On Tuesday, two Ultima Generazione (Last Generation) militants covered Botticelli’s Birth of Venus in the Uffizi in Florence with images of recent disastrous flooding in Tuscany.
