Blinding downpours and flash flooding will continue into Wednesday, according to experts.

The most likely area to experience flash flooding and mudslides will be Italy’s eastern coast.

While there will be some showers and thunderstorms across western Italy, including Rome and Naples, there will be a smaller risk of flash flooding in these areas.

Meanwhile, southern Italy will face the threat of strong thunderstorms with the chance of strong winds and perhaps even some small hail on Tuesday.

The unseasonable weather has already left the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna on high alert, as heavy downpours caused rivers to swell on Monday.

The River Savio burst its banks in the province of Forlì-Cesena on Monday morning, while the Italian Fire Service rescued two residents who were trapped in their home.

Firefighters also evacuated homes in the province of Modena as they predicted that the Secchia and Panaro rivers could also flood.

Roads and bridges were closed in some areas due to landslides, while trains between Rimini and Bologna were interrupted.
