The Italian Education Awards for 2019 has scholarships available for teachers, secondary school students and primary school students.
Two scholarships to the value of $5,000 are available for teachers of Italian, each financed by the Father Atanasio Gonelli Charitable Fund.
With these prizes, the committee will offer to already certified teachers of Italian the possibility to update their teaching methods and techniques.
The winning teachers will be free to choose a training course that he/she wishes to attend, while reporting to the Gruppo dell’Amicizia in memoria di Enrica Inglese.
Concetta Cirigliano Perna, member of the committee and editorial director at Edizioni Farinelli, said that education and Italian language education is a “dynamic field”, with new methods of teaching continually becoming available.
The scholarships will allow Italian teachers to return to their field while applying the latest and greatest methods of instruction.
All applications from teachers must be received by July 31.
For students, monetary prizes of $500, $300 and $200 respectively will be available in the various categories of primary (Years 5 and 6) and secondary (consisting of three categories: Years 7 and 8, Years 9 and 10, and Years 11 and 12).
Secondary students must submit an essay not exceeding 1,000 words in response to the topic:
“Families have changed a lot in the past years: from the traditional family, to the extended family, single parents, and families with parents of the same sex. Express your opinion on these changes, and on the role of the family in your life and in modern society.”
Primary school students in Years 5 and 6 must submit an essay of no more than 500 words in Italian, on the topic:
“My family: who it is made up of, where they come from, what they represent for me and how important they are in my development.”
The closing date for all student entries in both primary and secondary school is Friday, August 30, 2019, at 5:00 pm.
The Gruppo dell'Amicizia in memoria di Enrica Inglese was founded in May 2018 by La Fiamma journalist, Armando Tornari, in memory of his late beloved wife Enrica Inglese.
With the creation of this group, Armando wished to pay tribute to the life of Enrica, who generously provided resources and energy for the benefit of the needy, and dedicated her time to the teaching and diffusion of the Italian language and culture.
Perna said that the group was founded with the direct intention of honouring Enrica Inglese’s passion and lasting legacy in the Italian community.
“Enrica believed in teaching Italian to students and second generation migrants,” she added.
“She practically dedicated her life to teaching the language.
“She believed in the Italian language as a vehicle for strengthening connection to Italian culture, through an increased sense of pride and knowledge.
“These scholarships are intended to inspire students of Italian, and the monetary prizes can be used eventually to buy books to assist in their study.”
The Italian Education Awards ceremony is scheduled for the end of November.
