Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kassani said Monday that foreigners in the country for tourism or business must respect its rules, referring to cases like that of Italian woman Alessia Piperno.

Piperno, a 30-year-old from Rome, was detained on September 28 and is being held at Tehran’s Evin prison, sources have said.

Iran has launched a massive wave of arrests following the outbreak of street protests related to the death in custody of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini after she was held by ‘morality police’ for allegedly breaching the Islamic republic’s dress code.

Piperno is reportedly accused of taking part in those protests along with several other foreign nationals.

“The investigations are continuing and the respective embassies and foreign citizens are being informed of the latest developments,” Kassani said.

“Iran is a safe country for all foreign travellers.

“No one will be disturbed. But they must respect our rules”.
