The grade-A listed building was due to be torn down to make way for a new ground for AC and Inter Milan.

Milan city council was unhappy with the superintendency’s move, which it said might encourage the Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri to abandon the northern city.

“If the decision is confirmed, there will be serious consequences for the future of the new stadium and for the diminishing possibility of teams staying in Milan,” it said.
