In addition to biology, which he studied last year, Christian is taking five VCE subjects: maths, English, physics, visual communication design and Italian.
To enhance his Italian language skills, he also attends after-school classes at CO.AS.IT. in Melbourne.
How did you find remote learning?
The first week was a bit difficult because there were many problems with the connection and it was difficult to understand what the teachers were saying.
I missed seeing my schoolmates during breaks.
We used Microsoft Teams for video classes, like so many schools in this critical moment.
Do you prefer to study at school or from home?
I prefer to study at school because I can concentrate better in the classroom.
I was very distracted at home because other students unintentionally disturbed the video classes when their microphones made noises and I couldn’t hear the teacher properly.
I also prefer to study at school because that way I get to see my friends more often.
Are you worried about your final exams?
You could say I was a little worried in the beginning because I couldn’t concentrate in the virtual classes.
How did you go during forced isolation?
Aside from school, it was quite relaxing because I had more time to take care of myself.
I spent more time with my family, exercised and did other things that I like, such as photography. I used the drone that I received for my 18th birthday, which I celebrated in April with friends and family via Zoom.
What plans do you have for next year? Do you think the coronavirus pandemic will have an impact on your future?
At the moment I don’t have any set plans, but I think I’ll enrol in an engineering course at university.
I plan to attend university and continue my studies.
I think it will have an impact on exams in November, seeing as we’ve missed many things in class during this period.
But I don’t think it will matter to me in the more distant future.
