The British celebrity chef made the controversial remark on the UK series Gordon, Gino and Fred Go Greek, in which he stars alongside London-based Italian chef, Gino D’Acampo, and French maître d’hôtel, Fred Sirieix.

Ramsay’s comments created a stir in Italy last week after an article appeared in Italian daily Corriere della Sera and they went on to make headlines in many large newspapers around the country.

Ramsay expressed his divisive opinion as the three protagonists of the show sipped champagne while sailing around Crete on a luxury yacht.

“Greece never gets the look-in that France has, or the Italians,” he said.

“Honestly, I think Greek cuisine is better than Italian cuisine.”

While Ramsay’s opinion has been welcomed in Greece, it infuriated D’Acampo at the time and has since caused widespread outrage among Italians on social media.

One Facebook user asked: “What does he know about Italian cuisine?”

Another said: “As far as we’re concerned, Gordon Ramsay can stay in Greece!”

Others remarked that while both cuisines are exceptional, Italian cuisine is more varied, referring to regional differences.

It is not the first time Ramsay has caused outrage in Italy, after he posted a picture of the “most amazing carbonara” on Instagram last year.

Italians were quick to criticise his dish, begging him to “please keep your hands of the Italian cuisine” and “stick to making hamburgers”.
