Organised every year by Italian teacher Marie Talarico, the event is an opportunity for students to practise their language skills and celebrate Italian culture.

Inspired by the Palio di Siena, Year 6 students carried the flags of the 17 contrade, or districts – based on the neighbourhoods surrounding the Highett school – while drums played in the background.

Each class then participated in a parade, wearing costumes that had been prepared at school in the lead up to the event.

Having coloured in the heads of their horses and prepared for the Palio, the students raced around the schoolyard with enthusiasm despite unfavourable weather.

After a lunch break with pizza and ice cream, students enjoyed the comedy show La Festa, with two Italian actors entertaining everyone with dancing and laughter, showing what you can do, see and taste when attending a party in Italy.

Sophie and Karl also interviewed their teacher, Mrs Talarico, asking many questions about her life and family, what she likes to do, and what her life was like as a child.

In particular, the students asked how and when their teacher had learned Italian, if she thinks in Italian and what she likes about Italy.
