The 47-year-old Algerian national died after the hit-and-run incident on Sunday.

A preliminary investigations judge on Wednesday validated the arrest of the woman who was detained in Pisa.

Prosecutors had sought pre-trial detention in prison while the woman’s defence attorney, Enrico Marzaduri, had asked for alternative measures.

The woman is accused of hitting Malkoun on purpose with her car after he had stolen her purse.

Investigative sources said video surveillance footage showed the woman intentionally steering her car to hit the man, who was walking on a sidewalk.

She then repeatedly ran him over at a relatively slow pace.

The sequence of the video, which lasts just over a minute, then shows the woman getting out of the car, taking back her purse and driving away, the sources said.
