Amazon successfully tests first drone delivery in Italy

Amazon said Thursday that it successfully tested its first drone delivery in Italy on Wednesday.

The online retail giant hopes to officially launch its drone-delivery service in the Bel Paese next year.

It said it used an MK-30 drone to deliver an Echo Spot smart alarm to a destination near its San Salvo distribution centre in Abruzzo.

It said the drone had a highly automatised system that enabled it to move around obstacles in order to protect the safety of people, animals and property.

The drone weighs around 36 kilos and has a range of 24 kilometres for the round trip and can deliver packages of up to 2.5 kilos.

Around 90 per cent of the products Amazon sells weigh less than this.
