Though no significant damage was immediately reported, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) stated that minor disturbances, such as objects falling off shelves or windows breaking, were recorded in several cities.
The earthquake struck at 5:50 pm in Italy and was felt in Florence, Scandicci, Empoli, Campi Bisenzio, San Casciano, Poggibonsi, Prato and Pistoia.
According to preliminary data, the earthquake was located at a depth of 10 kilometres, a distance that is considered “shallow” by experts.
Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than those that take place at a greater depth, as they are closer to the surface.
The earthquake was preceded by five small seismic events which occurred throughout Monday evening and into Tuesday.
