Inter Go Crazy — But With Joy: A Record-Breaking Olimpico Crowns Their Tenth Coppa Italia

After the Scudetto — their 21st — the Nerazzurri go and do it again. Four days after a thumping league win against the same opponents, the champions of Italy repeat the feat, this time dominating Lazio 2-0 in the national cup final.

Inter were ahead almost immediately thanks to an unfortunate Marusic own goal, and from that moment Zaccagni and his teammates never really found a way back into the game. Just past the half-hour mark, Lautaro doubled the lead, capitalising on another lapse from Lazio — this time Tavares caught napping by Dumfries.

After the break the scoreline didn't budge, with Chivu's side comfortably controlling proceedings and even threatening a third. A nightmare evening for the Biancocelesti: errors, no reaction, and in front of their own fans, the dream of salvaging a disappointing season with a direct route into the Europa League disappears into thin air.

Four days on from that crushing league encounter, Chivu stuck with the same attacking partnership. Thuram was fit and lined up alongside Lautaro, with Pio Esposito left on the bench despite not being fully sharp either. Zielinski pulled the strings in midfield, flanked by Barella and Sucic — preferred to Mkhitaryan.

Dumfries and Dimarco returned on the flanks, Akanji slotted back into central defence, and Josep Martinez kept his place in goal, with Calhanoglu still unavailable.

Lazio made a few tweaks after the 0-3 Serie A loss, most notably in attack, where captain Zaccagni returned to complete the front three alongside Noslin and Isaksen.

Taylor was also back in midfield, with Patric operating as the deep-lying midfielder and Basic as the other half. The one change at the back saw Tavares reclaim his spot at left back from Pellegrini.

The game got going without much of an early spark inside a sold-out, electric Olimpico — two historically friendly sets of supporters filling the stands — though a booking came after just six minutes, Bisseck carded for a hefty challenge on Noslin after sliding in at midfield.

The first real chance fell to the champions: Barella received on the right and picked out Lautaro in the box, who got ahead of Gila and headed just wide. Moments later, that near-miss became the appetiser for the opener — from Dimarco's corner, Thuram attacked the near post and got a touch, and behind him Marusic headed it past his own goalkeeper Motta. 1-0 Inter.

From there, Chivu's men took complete control. Dumfries went close to doubling it, only for Tavares to block his volley on the half-volley from another Dimarco cross.

Lazio, for their part, looked passive and toothless — and they paid for it.

Tavares was caught napping again, Dumfries nipped the ball off him and burst into the area before squaring for Lautaro, who couldn't miss from point-blank range. Before the break, Zielinski went close to a third, while Isaksen tested Martinez with a low drive that crept wide.

Early in the second half Inter continued to coast, until Lazio's first genuine chance on the hour mark — Noslin pulling the trigger from the centre of the area, agonisingly close but just off target.

After that both sides opened up, the game loosening into a more lively affair. The first substitutions followed: Lazio brought on Cancellieri for Isaksen, while Chivu introduced Mkhitaryan and Luis Henrique for Sucic and Dumfries.

Luis Henrique, seconds after coming on, squandered the chance for a third, while substitute Dia nearly pulled one back to make it 2-1 and set up a nervy finish.

In the dying minutes Inter continued to boss things and went close to a third through Zielinski, before a flashpoint erupted — a nasty foul by the recently-introduced Pedro on Di Marco, who didn't take kindly to it.

Referee Guida quickly restored order, and shortly after blew for full time, unleashing Inter's celebrations. Chivu, in his first season at the helm, has stunned and silenced every doubter — delivering a Scudetto, a Coppa Italia, and a future that is wide open.
