The organisation reported that 1808 people have died in the Mediterranean Sea this year in an attempt to reach Europe.

These numbers are significantly lower than the 211,433 arrivals and 2899 deaths across the region through June 11, 2016; however, Italy’s intake of migrants has increased.

Italy has been bearing the brunt of migrant arrivals ever since the Balkan Route into Greece was closed in early 2016.

The UN refugee agency has called for European nations to help Italy cope with an increasing flow of migrants after more than 2500 were rescued on the weekend and dozens were reported missing at sea after departing from Libya.

"Solutions cannot just be in Italy," the UNHCR said.

"New measures on both sides of the Central Mediterranean Sea to seriously combat trafficking are needed."

Libyan authorities recovered the bodies of eight migrants from an inflatable boat found east of Tripoli on Saturday, while the Italian coastguard coordinated more than a dozen search and rescue efforts to save lives.
