The announcement comes after the ancient city was named Europe’s Capital of Culture for 2019.
Bond 25 will star Daniel Craig as the secret agent for the fifth and final time.
The movie is due to begin filming in at Pinewood Studios, in the UK, on March 4.
Filming in Matera is set to begin on April 6, according to Italian media.
Rai News said some of the ancient city’s sites have already been listed to feature in the film, including: the historic centre and its Romanesque cathedral; some of the city’s picturesque stone streets and squares; and, of course, the Sassi – the ancient cave dwellings that the city is most famous for.
In past Bond films, 007 has travelled to Venice, Rome, Siena, Lake Como, Lake Garda, and the southern Italian island of Sardinia.
Meanwhile, Matera is no stranger to the camera: more than 50 films and TV series have been shot in the unique and stunning location, including Pier Paolo Pasolini’s The Gospel According to St Matthew (1964), Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ (2004) and Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman (2017).
Other countries which have been rumoured to feature in the film include Greece and Norway.
Bond 25 is scheduled to be released in February 2020.
