The acting mayor, Roberto Bonaccorsi, in agreement with councillor Sergio Parisi and assisted by the manager and officials of the Sports and Community Policies Directorate, has chosen a successful candidate from a pool of proposals.
The proposals concerned the relaunch of Catania’s football club, which declared bankruptcy in 2020.
The Pelligra Group’s proposal was considered the most suitable to fulfil Catania’s brief.
The council thanked “all the companies that put forward a proposal, including Giovannone, Ferlito, Ilari and Mascali”.
“We appreciate the well-thought-out proposals put forward by these companies,” the council said in a statement.
“They are a testament to the great city of Catania, that has attracted serious entrepreneurs and firm plans for the future.”
The Pelligra Group has expressed its satisfaction at being chosen.
“Representing the city of Catania is an honour we never dreamed of achieving,” a representative of the company said.
“The name of the new team, and whether or not our company’s name will be incorporated, will be up to the LND-FIGC Sicily Regional Committee.
“If ‘Calcio Catania’ and its logo will be repurposed and included is up to them.
“Pelligra Group thanks the council for its invitation to hold a joint press conference at the town hall on Monday, June 27.
“We would like to offer our sincere gratitude to those who have expressed interest in the relaunch of Calcio Catania and have offered their congratulations.”
Pelligra Group’s proposal – as required by federal regulations – will be forwarded to the Italian Football Federation, which will decide on the matter.
