The Pinguini Tattici Nucleari were voted the best Italian act of 2022 at the European Music Awards in Dusseldorf, Germany on Sunday night, taking usurping Roman rock sensations Måneskin.

The Bergamo group, whose name is inspired by Tactical Nuclear Penguin, a beer produced by Scottish brewery Brewdog, have had a great year, having released summer earworm hits such as ‘Giovani Wannabe’ and ‘Ricordi’, and sold out concerts at Milan's San Siro Stadium and the Olimpico in Rome.

They have also announced a stadium tour next summer.

"We are honoured to receive the Best Italian Act at the EMAs," they said.

"We have been reaching great targets recently, like the stadium tour, for example, which would have been unthinkable up until a few years ago.”

The band, led by frontman Riccardo Zanotti beat out fellow candidates Ariete, Blanco, Elodie and Måneskin in landing the award.

The Pinguini were honoured in the company of some illustrious international artists on the night, including Nicki Minaj, who snatched the best song and best hip hop awards, Taylor Swift, who took home statuettes for best artist and best long form music video, and Harry Styles, who won best live performance.
