Rome’s City Hall announced on Friday that the famous botticelle carriages will become electric.
“We will take horses off the streets,” environmental sustainability councillor Pinuccia Montanari said.
Ms Montanari added that the carriage operators, know as “vetturini”, will be given the chance to turn their business permits into taxi licenses.
Animal rights activists have long campaigned for the end of the iconic tourist attraction, arguing that the horses suffer from the noise, pollution and chronic chaos on the city’s crowded streets.
The move must now be approved by the council in full assembly.
