MELBOURNE - Participants competed in two Kahoot quizzes, answering questions about Italian geography, cuisine and music. The winner, Zac Watson, received two complimentary tickets from our sponsor, Showbiz Cinema in Mount Waverley.
This evening marked the first Parliamo session of the year. Every two weeks, the fantastic Mietta Ackland and Ben Covington from the committee organise these sessions where everyone from beginners to advanced speakers can learn Italian in a relaxed environment.
The goal is to give members the opportunity to socialise, make new friends and fall in love with the most beautiful language in the world.
We offer biscotti and good coffee prepared with a machine provided by Coffee Machine Warehouse in Clayton. As our Vice President Sarina Davidson always says, “Come for the food, stay for the culture.”
Each Parliamo meeting focuses on a different aspect of culture. In the coming weeks, for example, there will be a card tournament to celebrate and preserve this tradition in Australia.
Under the leadership of President Tahlia Guzzardi, along with the rest of the committee, this year we want to do more for the young Italo-Australian community.
Having said that, the Monash Italian Club is open not only to those of Italian heritage but to anyone passionate about all things related to the Bel Paese.
On Thursday, March 27, the club, together with other cultural societies at Monash University such as the French Society, the Spanish Latin American Club (SLAC), the Hellenic Society and the German Liechtensteiner Austrian Swiss Society (GLASS) hosted the inaugural event La Discoteca at the Clayton campus.
It was an unforgettable evening where music, food and European and South American culture brought together around 150 people from the various student associations.
The energy was sky-high and the atmosphere truly unique. Everywhere you looked, there was something special. Numerous stalls offered drinks and traditional dishes from the represented countries, from pretzels to burritos. The most common words of the night were, “How delicious!”
The Basil and Oregano kiosk, organised by the Monash Italian Club, was one of the evening’s highlights. It allowed attendees to share in one of the symbols of Italian culture and cuisine - delicious pizza!
On stage, the talented Alessio Fenech, AKA DJ Fenex, played music that had everyone dancing to rhythms and songs inspired by various European cultures. To end the night in style, a massive flash mob took place. Naturally, The Macarena and The Nutbush had everyone on their feet!
Organising the event took a lot of effort and dedication, but the result was extraordinary (so extraordinary in fact that it might become a tradition).
Seeing participants socialise, have fun and celebrate the different traditions was truly moving.
The Monash University Italian Club calendar is packed with many other events, including themed evenings, futsal tournaments and, of course, the famous end-of-year gala night.
