Lazio had 54 per cent of the ball and created 12 chances to Atletico’s five.
The visitors went ahead in the 29th minute when Pablo Barrios’ long-range shot took a nick off the outstretched foot of Daichi Kamada, wrongfooting Provedel and finding the back of the net.
Lazio should have been level ten minutes after the break when a poor clearance from Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak was intercepted by Felipe Anderson who headed the ball straight to Ciro Immobile, but the striker was unable to beat Oblak who recovered well.
In the 95th minute, the miraculous happened. Provedel came up for a Lazio corner in a gamble that paid off.
The initial corner was rebuffed, but when the next ball was whipped in by Luis Alberto, the Lazio goalkeeper met it on the run, heading in the equaliser before running off in celebration.
