Meloni reiterated that Italy is with Kyiv as it fends off the Russian invasion, her office said.

The meeting - the note from Palazzo Chigi informed - allowed the PM to reiterate Italy’s commitment, together with European, Western partners and the United States, to build a just and lasting peace which ensures a future of sovereignty, security and freedom for Ukraine.

Earlier, Meloni stressed the importance of averting the West splitting over Ukraine in talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

“I think it is very, very important that we avoid the risk of the West dividing,” Meloni said as she met Starmer in Downing Street before the London summit.

“And I think that in this the UK and Italy can play an important role in building bridges,” she said.

The 16-nation summit on Ukraine and European security was called before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s public humiliation at the White House Friday.

The nations discussed a British-French proposal to develop a just and lasting peace plan with moves forward by a European coalition of the willing.

Both Starmer and Meloni phoned US President Donald Trump after the bust-up in the Oval Office.

On Sunday, they re-emphasised the importance of transatlantic ties.
