After ten years as president, Carlo Abate has passed the baton to Robert Gabriel, a long-standing and active member of the Williamstown Italian Social Club.
The appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter for an institution deeply ingrained in Melbourne’s Italian community.
“It’s a great honour and a responsibility,” said Gabriel, who for more than five years has been helping organise the celebrations and events that bring the club to life.
“This is a special place, part of our history and heritage. You can feel the dedication and passion of those who built the Italian community in Melbourne, like my parents and many other migrant families,” he added.
Founded in 1978, the club now occupies a building that once housed the oldest cinema in Victoria. “In 1978, 200 families joined forces to purchase the building and save it from decay,” Gabriel recalled. “Since then, it has become a cultural and social landmark for everyone.”
Among the main challenges ahead are maintaining the historic, century-old premises and securing funds to sustain activities. “Over the years, we’ve completed major renovations, but further structural work is needed,” he said.
“At the same time, we want to open up more to the wider community: the club must be a home for everyone.”
Gabriel also speaks proudly of his roots. “Growing up between two cultures is a gift. As Italians abroad, we have a duty to preserve our identity, but also to give back to the community. That’s what I try to do every day.”
