ROME - Summer 2026 has been the hottest in Italy since 1950, the National Research Council (CNR) said Monday.
It has beaten the summer of 2003, which until now had held the record.
This was reported by the Institute for Bioeconomy of the National Research Council (CNR-IBE), which analyzed temperatures recorded since 1950 in the ERA5 Land database of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).
It turns out that in the summer of 2026 the average temperature across the entire national territory has been 24.3°C at two metres above the ground, compared to the average of 23.6°C in the summer of 2003, also across the entire national territory and at two metres above the ground, said Lorenzo Arcidiaco of the CNR-IBE.
