An Italian supercomputer is now the world’s fourth fastest, its manager Cineca announced at SC22, the most important international conference for High Performance Computing in Dallas, Texas on Tuesday.
With a High-Performance Linpack (Hpl) of 174.7 petaflop, the European supercomputer ‘Leonardo’ has overtaken others in the world top 500, moving into fourth place in the global speed rankings.
Cineca is co-funded by Eurohpc Ju and by Italy’s university and research ministry.
The Leonardo computer is located at the Tecnopolo of Bologna, where it will be inaugurated on November 24.
This is also thanks to the investments made by the Emilia-Romagna Region for the urban redevelopment and infrastructure of the former Manifattura Tabacchi area, where the Bologna Tecnopolo is now a reality: an authentic citadel of science, big data and new technologies, where the Data Centre of the European Weather Centre, Agenzia Italia Meteo, is already located, and where universities, research centres and all of the country’s main scientific institutes will be based.
The ceremony on November 24 will be dedicated to the scientific and technological research community, in the presence of European, Italian and regional authorities.
“The Data Valley of Emilia-Romagna is increasingly becoming an international Big Data platform for sustainable growth, innovation and human development ― at the service of our territory, but above all, of the country and Europe,” said the President of the Region Stefano Bonaccini.
Leonardo’s fourth place ranking in the world top 500 list is especially impressive, because the system was installed in a very short time: the installation of Leonardo only began in July, and continued throughout the summer with the delivery of the 155 racks, and the thousands of components of the supercomputer.
