The maestro, a world-famous writer, composer, opera director, playwright, musicologist and ethno-musicologist, formed the company at the end of the 60s.
It went on to set new standards for reviving traditional folk songs since then.
Ten years after founding it he wrote a hit opera, La Gatta Cenerentola, inspired by the folk tale of the same name.
De Simone was also artistic director of Naples’ San Carlo opera house, the oldest opera venue in the world, from 1981 to 1987.
It will dedicate a special night to him this autumn.
La Scala in Milan is also set to honour the musician. The Nuova Compagnia debuted at the Piccola Scala in 1972.
