Abruzzo chef kidnapped in Ecuador

An Italian kidnapped in Ecuador Sunday was identified as Panfilo Colonico, a chef and restaurateur from Sulmona near L’Aquila in Abruzzo who moved abroad just over two years ago.

Before Ecuador, Colonico had been in Canada where he had opened a construction company.

At the height of the COVID-19 lockdown period, the Sulmona native decided to open an Italian restaurant in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s commercial capital, called Il sabore mio (My Flavour).

His sister and ex-wife live in Sulmona, his hometown.

CCTV footage showed Colonico being led out of the restaurant by two men armed with machine guns and dressed as police.

Colonico, known as Benny, opened the eatery in 2020 in the Garzota district of the industrial city.

The daily El Universo said the kidnapping took place Saturday night.

The Primicias news portal said Colonico had gained headlines after going out with a number of female TV show hosts.
