Iranian director and cartoonist Marjane Satrapi will chair the jury of the Progressive Cinema Competition, a new competition section of the Festa del Cinema di Roma.

This was announced by artistic director Paola Malanga, in agreement with Gian Luca Farinelli, President of the Fondazione Cinema per Roma, and Francesca Via, general director.

Auteur of the critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated animated film Persepolis and works such as Chicken with Plums, La bande des Jotas, The Voices and Radioactive, all of which screened at major international festivals, Marjane Satrapi, who lives in Paris, has been participating in protests in solidarity with Iranian women since the beginning of October.

Satrapi will be joined by actor and director Louis Garrel, directors Juho Kuosmanen and Pietro Marcello, and producer Gabrielle Tana. The jury will award the Progressive Cinema Competition films the following prizes: Best Film, Grand Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Screenplay, the ‘Monica Vitti’ Award to the Best Actress, ‘Vittorio Gassman’ Award to the Best Actor, and the Jury's Special Prize, to be chosen from the categories of cinematography, editing and original soundtrack.

The Festa del Cinema will also present the ‘Ugo Tognazzi’ Prize for Best Comedy, which will be awarded by a jury chaired by filmmaker Carlo Verdone and composed of actress Marisa Paredes and author and actress Teresa Mannino.

Special attention will be paid to young directors with the BNL BNP Paribas Best First Work Award: a jury chaired by director and screenwriter Julie Bertuccelli and comprising director Roberto De Paolis and film critic Daniela Michel, will award the prize to one of the titles in the program in the Progressive Cinema and Freestyle Competition sections.
