The away side had most of the ball and created more than twice the number of chances (12 to five) and would be disappointed not to have scored more.
The home side were awarded a penalty early on for a trip on Maistro in the box.
Moncini sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot to make it 1-0 SPAL.
In the second half, Ternana went close when Corrado beat the keeper with his shot, but defender Dalle Mura got back and cleared the ball to keep SPAL ahead.
Ternana’s Anthony Partipilo missed a guilt edged opportunity, failing to finish a cross from point-blank range with the keeper already taken out.
Substitute Gabriele Capanni’s long-range strike was on target, but Alfonso got down to his right quickly, producing an excellent save.
The equaliser finally came in the 84th minute when Favilli got on the end of a back-post cross and headed the ball in.
SPAL are five points from reaching the relegation play-off zone.
